A Meditation Space: Meditation and Prayer for the Earth & Universal Healing

    whispering_clouds.jpg

In response to the deep challenges to all we value and hold sacred as well as to our own well-being, the well-being and very life of our human communities, and of all life on this Earth, we are hosting a meditation circle that is open to all.

Our intention is to hold a safe, supportive and sacred space in which we can connect to the sources of our resilience and the wellspring of our vision and courage.  From that invitation to healing reconnection, we will open a space to offer our prayers for the healing of all beings and of the living Earth whereby we are sustained.

Each evening meditation will be held, in alternation, by Rima Shah and Marya Bradley.  We will offer a period of guided meditation that will open into a time of quiet meditation. We will close the meditation with the practice of non-sectarian/non-religious prayer for all beings and the Earth.

    Bi-monthly Tuesday evenings: March 14, 28; April 11 & 25; May 9 & 23

Sliding scale fee $5/$10/$15 per evening.

    Resilience Practices for Changemakers

    IMG_0035.jpg

a workshop led by Kate Werning

The future of our country and our world is at a tipping point. To transform the systems of extraction, exploitation, and violence that are destroying our planet and further harming the most marginalized communities, we need all hands on deck.

But we gotta still be here in order to make lasting change. Our own resilience is foundational to our strategy. Our psyches, spirits, and bodies must be cared for every step of the way, not sidelined until “after the work is done." Whether you’re new to social change work or have been at it for decades, we need you to be supported and in balance, so your nervous system can down-regulate from automatic stress response and create the space that is neurologically and biologically needed for creativity, stamina, and resilience.

    Any of this sound familiar?

    • Suppressing underlying anxiety, fear, rage, or grief through working harder or taking constant action

    • Shame that turning off the news or social media, taking time off, or resting makes you complacent, privileged, or disengaged

    • Martyring your physical health, relationships, or personal goals for the sake of your work

    • Lack of patience and frustration at others who are not showing up in the ways you think they should

    The good news:

We can work for change in a way that doesn't turn the evils of extraction, exploitation, and dehumanization in upon ourselves and each other.

You are invited to breathe, to inhabit your body, to imagine, and to be connected to a community of supportive peers in your changemaking work who see and care about you beyond the roles you play and the work you do.

    What we’ll do together:

    • Share simple healing practices you can take with you: meditation, embodied practice, essential oils, & more

    • Learn how systems of oppression are showing up in our our bodies, and what trauma and grief have to do with it

    • Explore the boundaries and practices we need to interrupt oppression from passing through us into the work

    • Create a space of mutual care to be honest about our emotional realities and not have to perform hope or rep our current projects or campaigns

    • All of the practices are completely accessible - no specific physical ability, supplies, or exercise clothes needed!

Best of all, we build a community of support with changemakers who share our commitment to liberation & wellbeing along the way.

Who this is for: This workshop sits at the intersection of social change, peer support, and internal transformation. It serves a diverse group of organizers, healers, wellness practitioners, and newer activists ready to dive into the work of inner and outer change. As a facilitator I have anti-oppression and trauma-informed mindfulness and organizing training, and the workshop space strives to be inclusive and supportive of all gender expressions, sexual orientations, dis/abilities, racial identities, class backgrounds, and learning styles. Absolutely no previous experience with yoga, meditation, somatics, or anything of the sort is needed - come as you are! *Please note that the OmTown Center space requires climbing stairs to reach the workshop room. We are deeply sorry for not being able to accommodate all access needs.*

    SLIDING SCALE FEE. Range $15-60.

REGISTER EARLY. The workshop will be limited to 15 participants so reserve your space now.

STREET PARKING. Allow extra time to find a spot and the possibility of walking a little ways.

SCHEDULE NOTE. Last 30 minutes is optional socializing.

    ABOUT KATE WERNING

Kate grew into organizing by the resilient leadership of undocumented folks and youth of color right here in Milwaukee, organizing youth-led campaigns for racial justice and immigrant rights with Voces de la Frontera, and then went on to co-launch the Ayni Institute and Momentum trainings for community organizers. She serves on the Advisory Board of OmTownYogis, and is faculty at CTZNWELL where she spent the last 2 years mobilizing wellbeing practitioners toward collective action for social change as national Organizing Director.

Refusing to believe that working for social change is inevitably exhausting, Kate took up a yoga practice and soon trained as a trauma-informed Hatha yoga teacher with YamaYoga, Off the Mat Into the World, and Oppression in the Soma. She integrates somatic tools into her organizing to work from the heart, serves on the faculty of Liberation School, uplifts interdependence and social justice in her yoga classes at Third Root Community Health Center, and runs a community house called the Hoop House in Brooklyn, NY.
